    Hand-dyed yarn is art

Look, we get it. Hand-dyed yarn is more expensive than mill-dyed options, and significantly more expensive than the stuff you can grab off the shelf at Michaels. And we’re not here to tell you how to live.

We don’t purely stock hand-dyed yarn because we believe that mill-dyed yarn can be a wonderful, worthwhile option. But what we are here to do is make a case for the artists who make our hand-dyed yarns. Because that’s the thing…hand-dyed yarns are works of art created by artists.

Hand-dyers are passionate about their work

Hand-dyeing yarn is a time and labour-intensive process. Each skein of yarn is individually manipulated with dye hand-applied often dozens of times to achieve the desired result. Each skein, even within the same batch, is unique because each one is dyed separately.

Each skein has been individually assessed and worked on until it is exactly what the artisan is looking for. And every skein will bring a uniqueness to whatever you decide to make with it—tiny, almost imperceptible variations in the yarns can have a dramatic effect on your finished piece, making it truly one-of-a-kind.

Hand-dyed yarns are wonderful to work with

Hand-dyed yarns are luxury yarns—they are made by yarn lovers who only want to use (and provide their customers with) yarns that are a delight to work with. Even the most basic yarn in an artisan’s collection will be a joy to use. We would like to be able to say that about typical big box store yarns…but we really, really can’t.

That being said, and we want to be clear about this, it is entirely possible to get beautiful, high-quality, mill-dyed yarn. Our Sugar Bush collection is a perfect example of mill-dyeing done right, by manufacturers who are dedicated to creating wonderful products that makers will love. In the end, you’re looking at the difference between an excellent product from a manufacturing line and one that was individually crafted by an artisan. Obviously, we believe that there is a place for both—we only stock yarns that we love.

    A Never-ending Selection of Yarn

The world of hand-dyed yarn is a world of infinite variety. Artists experiment with shade manipulation, colour effects, and new dye techniques, making a never-ending spectrum of gorgeous yarns. No two dyer’s products are the same.

    We love our dyers

Hand-dyed yarns are, first and foremost, labours of love. Dyers pour their hearts, souls, and all their creative energy into these beautiful creations, and when you buy the yarn, that love and energy passes on to you. It’s a wonderful relationship that we here at Darn Yarn are delighted to facilitate.

All of our hand-dyed yarns are made by real peoplewho live their lives and do the work they love in their home communities all over the continent. When you buy their creations from us, you’re helping to support them in this work. You’re buying local without leaving your house (pretty sweet, no?).

We love our suppliers and we’re always looking for new artists to feature. If there’s an indie/small batch dyer that you’d like to see us stock, please let us know!
