Today we’re proud to feature another member of the Darn Yarn family. Mandy Poje of Spun Ware Over the Rainbow lives in the Comox Valley of Vancouver Island, BC. She creates beautiful rainbow yarns that must be seen to be believed.
Mandy started her career in fibre arts by crocheting and selling hats for kids. “I bought one ball of yarn and made a hat. I was able to sell the hat to buy 2 more balls of yarn, and it snowballed after that.” Making and selling hats allowed her to stay home with her 4 kids while still contributing to the family’s income.
One day Mandy found some gorgeous yarns online and learned that they were hand spun. She knew she needed to give it a try herself.
A lady that lived down the road gifted me a carder. So, I got some raw wool, cleaned it, dyed it with Kool-Aid, and carded it on the carder. I found a tiny little spinning wheel on Craigslist and taught myself to spin.
Mandy especially loved the dyeing process, and Spun Ware Over the Rainbow evolved from that love:
Being able to dye the wool any color I wanted was so exciting. So, I started dyeing wool for sale. Then combed top, and then eventually tried the commercially spun sock yarns.
As her business name suggests, Mandy takes great joy in rainbows.
I absolutely love rainbows. They are my inspiration.
She also finds inspiration in her day-to-day life. “I see colourways in everything I look at … from people’s houses, to gardens, flowers, the weather, cars driving by, and even people’s outfits.” She loves every aspect of her work: the dyeing process itself as well as photographing her creations.
If you ask Mandy what she does for a living, she’ll tell you, “I simply dye rainbows.” She doesn’t have a studio, so every skein is carefully dyed in her kitchen sink. With a little creativity, she’s made it work just fine.
I do not have a studio, and I am a renter and having moved 24 times in the last 20 years makes it extremely difficult to have a proper workspace. So, we make do and have found techniques that work for our living space.
The results are stunning.
Mandy’s goals for the future are to keep growing Spun Ware Over the Rainbow, getting her hand-dyed yarns and fibres into the hands of knitters and crocheters around the world. We’re so happy she’s joined the Darn Yarn family, and we look forward to helping spread her rainbows far and wide!
