It’s time to Meet the Maker! Today, our featured dyer is Baa-realis Fibre from the Edmonton region of Alberta, Canada.
Jessica DeMoor, the creative mind behind Baa-realis Fibre, grew up in a family of yarn lovers. One of her earliest memories is sitting on her grandmother’s lap and digging through a container of knitting notions.
Knitting has always been a meditative refuge for Jessica—one that’s been part of her life for so long that she can’t remember actually learning to do it.
The rhythm of the stitches calms my nervous system, the colours soothe my soul, and the act of creating invigorates me. I read once that the desire to keep creating mirrors the Creator, and so fibre arts are a spiritual and prayerful endeavour for me as well.
She especially loves knitting clothing for her loved ones because it feels like she’s wrapping the person in a hug when they wear her creations.
A labour and delivery nurse, and mom of 4 kids aged 9 and under, Jessica made the mid-pandemic decision to trade crowded city life for (relative) peace and quiet. She moved her family to an acreage just outside of Edmonton with trees, a garden, and wide-open spaces—plenty of room for dreams.
One of those dreams was dyeing her own yarn, and she finally decided to go for it after years of thinking about it. The stress of being a nurse during COVID meant she needed an outlet, the new house had space available (including a huge porch that now doubles as a summer dye studio), and her fibre friends were incredible cheerleaders.
She took the plunge and hasn’t looked back.
Baa-realis Fibre has grown exponentially very quickly, and it’s been amazing seeing the growth both in the business and in myself.
Jessica’s colourways are inspired by the natural beauty around her.
If you draw a map of Alberta, I live almost dead centre, right between the enormous beauty of the Rocky Mountains, and the endless beauty of the prairies. I spend hours in forests and by lakes any chance I get. Those landscapes are my biggest inspiration for my colourways.
As you can probably guess, the name Baa-realis Fibre is also inspired by nature. Jessica and her family love following the science of the Aurora Borealis (the northern lights).
The kids love when I scoop them out of bed in the middle of the night to get on their snowsuits, and come drink hot chocolate, snuggled under blankets, and watch the ribbons of light dancing across the sky.
Jessica loves watching her colorways take shape. “Washing the yarn is probably my favourite way to see all the colours mixing together in unlimited combinations and many of my colourways still make me gasp out loud every time I wash them.”
She also loves seeing the amazing things her customers create with her yarns.
It makes me feel like we’re on a team, creating beauty together.
What’s next for Jessica and Baa-realis Fibre? She’s going to spend the summer having as much fun with her family as she can. Her kids love helping her dye, so there could be some interesting new colourways in the works.
She’s also experimenting with a series of colourways based on birch trees in every season. It sounds spectacular!
Welcome to the Darn Yarn Family, Jessica! We can’t wait to see what you come up with next!
