Meet the Maker: Arcane Fibre Works

Darn Yarn is thrilled to welcome Arcane Fibre Works to our family of makers!

Tyler Burgess is a self-proclaimed yarnaholic from southern Alberta.

I currently have a stash that would rival your local yarn shop… and by rival, I mean crush… literally. But what indie dyer doesn’t!

Tyler didn’t plan on being an indie dyer. He started his fibre arts career as a marketer for an established dyer, but soon he caught the bug and learned to make colourways himself. The dyer he worked with allowed him to flourish and dye to his heart’s content, and he ended up dyeing thousands of skeins in just over a year.

The experience served him well—when the time was right, he branched out on his own and became Arcane Fibre Works. Tyler and his wife Kaeley built Arcane around two essential principles: quality and customer service. “Highest quality yarn, uniquely dyed, with a smile!”

Tyler’s colourways are inspired by nature and digital art, and he’s well known for posting stunning photographs of his colourways beside the images that inspired them.

I love landscape photography. And the digital arts. More often than not, I’m drawn to deep, dark, broody colours, and often have to remind myself to look at the lighter side for some inspiration as well.

 

One of the things that Tyler loves most about his work is the physical process of dyeing itself.

I love seeing a Colourway come together, adjusting as needed to match my inspiration. It’s almost like cooking a great stew, taste adjust, taste again, repeat. Then seeing all the amazing colours interacting in the pot to produce depth, and uniqueness. Sends shivers up my spine!

Tyler also loves sending his creations into the world and seeing what other people do with them.

Seeing how our customers transform a Colourway into a sweater or sock or shawl, how the pools of colour play with one another, and how the imperfections become unique patterns. … The only time I get to see the true form of my work is when someone is gracious enough to share it with me.

Arcane Fibre Works is brand new and growing fast, so Tyler and his family are riding the wave and enjoying the process. We know that the future will bring great things and we can’t wait to see what happens next!
